Lighting - nothing is as important or difficult to masterEvery year in January, once the festive Christmas lights have disappeared and, in the fall, as it gradually gets darker earlier, our customers express the same wish more and more: "a lamp." This often leads to detailed conversations because finding the ideal lamp is not as simple as it may seem.
THE RIGHT LIGHTING IN THE RIGHT PLACE In social media and magazines, we often see pictures of rooms where a light is placed in the wrong spot. A trendy chandelier or a stylish arrangement of exposed light sources above the dining table may look good, but it often makes one feel uncomfortable. Most of the light is lost to the ceiling in one case, and in the other, you are unpleasantly blinded when turning up the dimmer. In the bathroom, there may only be a ceiling light or just a wall light on the left side of the mirror, neglecting the practical side of shaving, makeup, or inserting contact lenses. Above the kitchen counter, there may be several pendant lights that you bumps your head against while leaning over the cutting board. It is important to recognize the type of lighting needed and not be easily blinded by the beauty of a light (pun intended). Do you need direct or diffused light? Should a dark corner be illuminated, or are you planning to read or watch TV in an area? Each lamp is more or less suitable for different purposes and emits different types of light.
NUMBER OF LIGHT SOURCES We also often discuss the importance of the number of light sources in a room. Generally, our plans involve using five to seven light sources per room. In larger, connected spaces, we recommend a different calculation by planning at least three to four light sources per area. A lack of light sources leads to excessively bright and glaring light, as there is a higher demand for light. Additionally, with only one or two lamps, undesirable shadow patterns emerge.
INFORMATIVE LIGHTING Informative lighting is essential in public spaces. Stairs are well-lit, house numbers are clearly visible. However, in a private setting, using the same concept can leave a cold or stylized impression. Often, it is enough to create well-lit rooms with diffuse general lighting. In the dark season or at night, this can be dimmed or controlled by motion sensors – an important argument, especially for older individuals.
SPOTLIGHTING Spotlighting is necessary when, for example, you want to highlight artwork, illuminate a bookshelf, or create other lighting effects.
GENERAL LIGHTING Classic general lighting, to illuminate a room as a whole, consists of a ceiling light that distributes light throughout the entire space.
TASK OR WORKPLACE LIGHTING Reading lights in the form of floor, table, wall, or clamp lights provide direct light to illuminate the desired activity – a function that becomes increasingly important with age.
MOOD LIGHTING Light sources that create a pleasant mood are often of natural origin: candle light and fire. Combined with several dimmable light sources in the room, the desired atmosphere is eventually achieved.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING External lighting influences well-being both indoors and outdoors. It contributes to coziness and perceived security. However, it is important not to use too much, too strong, or incorrectly directed light outside to avoid disturbing neighbors, animals, or the ecosystem. Light pollution should be avoided and reduced through motion sensors and indirect light.
THE RESULT The appearance of a room, the functions to be fulfilled, and the appearance of the people in it are all the result of thoughtful lighting planning. Here, we can learn a lot from photographers and filmmakers. It is a highly complex field but crucial for successful interior design. Also, the way a lamp is presented with various light sources plays a role. Some lamps are designed for clear, others for opal light sources and look different when the wrong one is used. The effect of colors is also a result of lighting: a color in a room is perceived differently under north-facing daylight than in a south-facing room, as well as with electric light. The light reflectance must also be considered in room design. How many and what type of light sources do we need, and what effect do we want to achieve? Are walls, ceilings, and floors light or dark? Are there mirrors reflecting light? Therefore, the right lighting is crucial for how we feel in a room and cannot be quickly achieved by buying a trendy lamp. We are happy to provide advice. |
