Audit before action
Our yearly training campWe've been back from our yearly training camp at the Stockholm Furniture Fair and Stockholm Design Week for a little while now. Since we've been back, we have digested all our impressions: the testing of new released pieces and checking out specific pieces for clients and for our shop and are ready to let you in on some of our more memorable moments. We've talked about it before: sustainability is and has been key to our partner producers for many years now. This year, however, there was a striking difference in the feeling of urgency and sincerity in the discussions held. The theme "I'm slow" by Massproductions (who also ended up winning "Best Product") hit the nerve in a unique way! ‘We hope this approach might encourage visitors to slow down and think twice before acting on their first “I want this” instinct – and perhaps even inspire some of our colleagues in the industry,’ says Massproductions co-founder Magnus Elebäck. ‘It’s time to make smarter choices and think more carefully about why we consume the way we do. If we slow down, we will have the time to make sure we buy products with a long-lasting value, in terms of quality, design or even the resale value.’ In general, adding to the focussed efforts continuously made in developing new sustainable materials, looking at recycling and reusing options and sustainable production, there was much time spent talking about taking a lot of time to develop new designs and interiors. Designers are continuously asking themselves: "Does it make sense to develop this product at all? Can I stand behind this product?". Producers are asking themselves: "Do we have hidden gems in our archives?" or "How can we go into collaboration with other producers in order to be able to extend our offer while staying focussed on our expertise?". Turning these thoughts into actions leads to consolidation of collections as well as increased demand for a wide array of services, such as reparation and renovation services, interior design services and needs analyses. In short: a positive approach to taking time, questioning every step on the way and getting help from experts in order to create something sustainable. |
AD Magazine & Elle Decoration Magazine Interior Designer of the Year Award
Emma OlbersVery fitting to the theme of 2019's AD Design Summit in Munich end of last year "sustainable elegance", Emma Olbers won the award 'Interior Designer of the Year' for her work in the Old Library, a part of the newly renovated National Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. A main feature in that room is the Biblioteket (library) rug, which was developed in collaboration with Asplund. It's a hand-knotted rug with a design that represents a mixture of Emma’s first sketches of the Old Library in the National Museum. With its three arches and three large windows at the top, in the middle rows of books in the old bookshelf and at the bottom the newly laid oak parquet. The rug is made by Asplund out of Tencel®, a new sustainable material made of wood. And in February this year, Emma Olbers also received the Elle Deco Interior Designer of the Year Award. Already before these awards, Emma was a "household" name in the Scandinavian design scene, having brought beautiful and sustainable designs to us for more than 20 years in close cooperation with different producers. What we admire about her designs is that they are so intrinsic to the companies she designs for. When she designs for Asplund, the product will end up with the typical Asplund DNA. You will never find similar chairs by her for different producers. It's always genuine, consistent and sustainable. We also love the product range Emma has developed for Eldvarm. A fireplace collection of gorgeous as well as practical companion sets and log baskets. Finally!! We have the range on stock. |

Nanna and Børge
FredericiaThe great leading lady, Nanna Ditzel, and the renowned master of Danish design, Børge Mogensen, took centre stage at the always beautiful Fredericia booth at the fair. Fredericia had searched their archives and found old treasures, that we have coveted for a long time, and put them into production again: The Ditzel Lounge Chair - just as beautiful and elegant as it is comfortable. A classic piece that fits equally well in a private home or in a more public setting, such as a lobby. The BM61 and BM62: These chairs by Børge Mogensen have fetched quite substantial sums at vintage auctions for many years and we know why - it's a striking dining chair that’s comfortable before, during and after dinner. The Canvas Chair: We were also in for a surprise with the launch of this chair, which was designed by Børge Mogensen, but never put into production until now. The Canvas Chair was one of the last pieces Børge Mogensen designed. He brought a lifetime of experience into the design of it and made a chair out of natural materials that signals a timeless, casual, aesthetic. |

Casework
Erik Jørgensen x SnøhettaWe immediately felt drawn, not only to its look, but also to the outstanding comfort of the Casework sofa from Erik Jørgensen. It consists of a clean lined, wooden frame and soft inviting cushions. The Erik Jørgensen x Snøhetta's ‘Casework’ sofa is conceived to be customisable. Together they have developed a sofa that is created for various spaces, where the focus is on how the furniture is tailored to its purpose and its surroundings. As with every design from Erik Jørgensen, thorough manufacturing with honest materials ensures furniture with a long lifetime. To further ease production, the Casework sofa’s frame can be prefabricated, and customized panels rapidly mounted on demand in the factory. In addition, the upholstery of the cushions can be selected from a wide array of materials in order to end up with a sofa that fits effortlessly in a variety of environments. |
Scheduled for autumn 2020: the BM0488
Looking forward to an iconLater on this year we will be able to enjoy Carl Hansen & Søn's relaunch of Børge Mogensen's gorgeous BM0488 table bench as well as his insider icon, the BM0865 Daybed or as it's also know: The Football Sofa, based on an early promotional photo of a young football team lounging on it. |
