Holm in the Hortus: A place that points to the future

04/06/2025

With the Hortus a building has been created in Allschwil that breaks new ground in many respects - and provided an inspiring stage for our team in terms of office interior design.

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron on behalf of Senn Resources, it is made almost entirely of wood and pursues a consistently sustainable concept. The carbon footprint of the entire building should be neutralized within around 30 years - making it energy-positive within a generation. An impressive vision that goes far beyond architectural aspirations.

«HORTUS is radical and cozy at the same time. It is both futuristic and historic. It is cosmopolitan and private. It is sufficient and efficient, raw and chic, unobtrusive and luxurious at the same time. And most importantly: anyone who visits HORTUS naturally wants to stay.» hortus.ch

We had the opportunity to help design the co-working space operated by Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area on the second floor - a task that we were enthusiastic about from the outset. The aim was to develop a furnishing concept that would do justice to the ecological aspirations of the building and at the same time create spaces that enable both concentrated work and creative collaboration.

Together with Montana Furniture, Fredericia Furniture and Håg, we focus on durable materials, calm, clear forms and a high degree of flexibility - for individual workstations as well as for changing team constellations.

Office interior design with attitude

In addition to the architecture, we are particularly fascinated by the indoor climate, the light and the acoustics. All of this creates a clearly perceptible atmosphere that has an immediate effect: on body, mind and concentration.

The co-working space in the Hortus is an example for us of how interior design, sustainability and attitude can come together. For us, this project was much more than a commission - it was a contribution to a place that sets new standards without being loud. And which already shows today how tomorrow can be built and worked.
