Friends of holm°: Flinc Cycles

05/11/2024

holm° stands for Scandinavian design, but remarkable designs are also created elsewhere. Especially in Zurich, there are always exciting things to discover. In a series, we present selected products and the people behind them, with whom we have a special connection.

This time around we’d like to present our friends at Flinc. Flinc is not all about furnishings, but about bicycles. More specifically, a new, maneuverable compact cargo bike, which is perfect for meandering through city centers. Behind the design of Flinc are Markus Freitag, known as the co-founder of bags made from truck tarpaulins, and industrial designer Sebastian Marbacher. Before Peter Kaufmann founded holm° together with Anna Berg, he worked for Freitag for several years at the turn of the millennium. And Sebastian Marbacher worked for holm° during his studies. Zurich is sometimes small.

The first FREITAG bags were designed for cyclists. As with the bags, one of the main motivations behind the bicycle design was to create a product that meets the company’s own high standards of form, function and sustainability. Bicycle scenes from Steven Spielberg’s 80s blockbuster E.T., in which Elliott transports his extraterrestrial friend on a small bicycle in a box mounted on the front, had an influence on the design process.

The new category of compact cargo bicycles is perfect for sustainably-minded people who want to transport earthly things such as small purchases. The Flinc is playful and easy to ride, thanks in part to its small wheels. These enable a lower loading height, which keeps the center of gravity low and prevents the bike from tipping forward when fully loaded – even with several shopping bags in the transport box. It rides more like a normal bike than a classic cargo bike, using muscle power alone, without an electric motor.

Flinc is available in three sizes, S, M and L, in a beautifully shimmering shade of blue. The frame is made of steel, the front rack of aluminum. It has 11-speed hub gears from Shimano and a low-maintenance belt drive. Thanks to the hub dynamo, the front and rear lights light up automatically as soon as you set off. Each Flinc comes with two differently sized transport boxes (one in petrol and one in pink) as well as various colored elastic loops that can be used to secure loads. The bike weighs 16 kilograms and costs CHF 3,300.

Flinc is available at the Flinc headquarters in Zurich-Wiedikon, at selected bicycle dealers and also at holm°. The flinc delivery vehicle from holm° is parked at our premises in the Hürlimann-Areal and can be tested during opening hours.
