PP Møbler: Furniture that lasts
08/05/2026
PP Møbler is one of the few workshops where you immediately sense that furniture making can be more than just production. Since 1953, the Danish manufactory from Allerød has stood for handmade furniture, an exceptional understanding of materials and a closeness to craftsmanship that is rarely so consistently visible in Scandinavian design to this day.
PP Møbler is particularly closely associated with Hans J. Wegner, one of the most important designers of Danish Modern. Wegner designed over 500 chairs and became known as the „Master of the Chair“. But for him it was never just about the iconic form. For Wegner, the chair was one of the most demanding pieces of furniture of all, because it is so close to the human being. A chair must support, support, be comfortable and at the same time appear natural.
This is precisely the special quality of PP Møbler. The workshop does not see Wegner's designs as historical design classics that are simply reproduced. Each chair requires decisions about wood, grain, proportion, connection, tension and surface. Nothing about it is random and nothing about it is quick.
PP Møbler and Hans J. Wegner
The collaboration between PP Møbler and Hans J. Wegner is one of the most important connections in Danish furniture design. Wegner always thought from the material. He was not only a designer, but also a trained carpenter. It is precisely this craftsmanship that still characterizes his designs today.
PP Møbler takes this thinking a step further. The furniture is not created based on industrial simplification, but on the question of what a design really requires. Wood is carefully selected, worked by hand and processed in such a way that construction and shape form a unity. The result is Scandinavian furniture that is not loud, but has a noticeable presence in a room.
A look from the outside confirms exactly this attitude. In a portrait of Vogue Scandinavia, Wegner's work is not primarily understood as design, but as a craft discipline - as the „science of chairmaking“, characterized by an understanding of materials, precision and a deep understanding of the human body. It is precisely the connection between Wegner and PP Møbler that makes it clear why this furniture has remained so relevant to this day.

The chair as a masterpiece
This is particularly evident in the Round Chair (pp501 / pp503), one of Hans J. Wegner's best-known designs. At first glance, it seems almost self-evident: a clear seat, a generously curved backrest and a shape that comfortably embraces the body. However, it is precisely this lightness that is extremely demanding in terms of craftsmanship. The arm and back sections in particular require a deep understanding of solid wood and its processing.
The Peacock Chair (pp550) also shows how Wegner did not quote historical references, but rather took them further. Inspired by the English Windsor Chair, he translated its construction into a modern, sculptural form. The widely splayed rods have an almost graphic effect and give the chair its striking appearance. Incidentally, the design was given the name „Peacock Chair“ by Finn Juhl, who thought the backrest was reminiscent of a peacock's wheel.
Another example is the pp225 Flag Halyard Chair. Wegner designed it in 1950 and showed a completely different side of his work. Instead of wood, the focus here is on stainless steel, flag line and sheepskin. The chair still looks surprisingly modern today and shows that Wegner not only mastered the classic carpentry craft, but also experimented with new materials and constructions. PP Møbler describes the pp225 with a stainless steel frame, 220 meters of specially developed flag line and long-haired sheepskin as a combination of industrial clarity and high comfort.
The Valet Chair (pp250) in turn shows Wegner's subtle humor and functional precision. A chair that is also a clothes valet could easily have become an idea that is stronger than the furniture itself. With Wegner, it remains both practical and poetic, useful and idiosyncratic.

Why PP Møbler remains relevant today
At a time when a lot of furniture functions primarily through visuals, PP Møbler seems almost radical. The brand reminds us that real quality does not have to be declared in the first second. It reveals itself over years. In the way wood ages. In the calmness of a joint. In the fact that a piece of furniture does not want to be replaced, but remains.
That is perhaps the real luxury of these pieces: not rarity alone, not status, not nostalgia. But a form of durability that comes from knowledge. PP Møbler produces Danish design furniture that is not designed for a quick impression, but for a long life in the room.
For us at holm°, this is exactly what is central. Scandinavian design does not mean minimalism for the sake of reduction. It means clarity with substance. Leaving things out until only that which carries remains. Functional, human, precise and with a naturalness that doesn't need to be staged.
PP Møbler stands for this attitude like hardly any other workshop. For furniture that you can feel has not only been designed, but also understood.
